Ely is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,724 at the 2000 census. The city is best known by outsiders as the most popular entry point for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 km (2.7 mi), all land. As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,724 people, 1,694 households, and 916 families residing in the city. The population density was 528.6/km (1,369.5/mi). There were 1,912 housing units at an average density of 271.4/km (703.2/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 96.86% White, 0.86% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.30% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.67% of the population.
There were 1,694 households out of which 21.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 45.9% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.72.
